How to Tell If a Tree Needs to Be Removed From Your Yard

How to Tell If a Tree Needs to Be Removed From Your Yard

Are you concerned about the health of that stately old oak tree in your backyard? It can be hard to part with a tree that’s become a central fixture of your landscaping, but in some cases it may be necessary to remove the tree if it’s putting your home or adjacent properties at risk.

It’s not always easy to tell when a tree needs to be removed, but you can start by looking at the roots.

A tree’s root system is the foundation that keeps it firmly anchored in the ground. If the root system is compromised, the entire tree will be at risk of falling over. Look for heaving soil at the base of the tree, which can be a sign that the root system is being pulled loose from the ground. You should also keep an eye out for fungi and decay at the base of the tree.

Next, examine the tree’s trunk and bark.

Large cavities in the trunk or scaffold branches are bad news for the overall health of the tree. Peeling and cracking bark are common signs of health issues in trees as well. If these issues are limited to a few isolated branches, you may be able to save the tree by removing the affected limbs. If they’re more widespread, it’s time to have the tree removed.

Finally, be mindful of the tree’s position on your property.

You should always err on the side of caution when trees are located near homes, power lines and other structures. If an unhealthy tree is on a more remote part of your property, it may not be necessary to have it removed right away.

At Brother Tree & Lawn Service, we can offer a professional assessment of the trees trees on your property to determine whether or not they pose a threat to your home or other nearby structures. This way, you can make an informed decision as to whether or not they need to be removed. Give us a call or contact us online to schedule your appointment today!
