Are the deer in your area making a meal out of the plants in your garden? You could use harsh chemicals to keep them away, but this approach can wind up doing more harm than good. Fortunately, there are a number of other ways to make your garden less appealing to deer as well.
Add scented plants, like lavender or marigolds, to your garden.
Deer typically do their best to steer clear of plants that have a strong scent. These scents can stick to their legs and make it more difficult for them to sense predators in the wild. If the deer are getting a little too comfortable in your garden, add a few aromatic plants like lavender or marigolds to your flowerbeds. This will give the deer a good incentive to stay away.
Hang decorations that make noise.
Deer constantly have their guard up as they listen for potential signs of trouble. Hanging wind chimes or other noise-making decorations can make deer wary of loitering around your garden for too long. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even find ultrasonic devices that are specifically designed as deer deterrents.
Install a deer fence.
Deer are impressive jumpers, so if you decide to install a fence around your garden, it will need to be at least 8 feet high. Make sure it’s clearly visible so that deer don’t accidentally get tangled up in it either.
